2008 February 9:
In the file entitled "Comparison of definitions of 'homo-' words" at
click,
added a line to the summarizing remarks under "Comments", saying that all sources
require that homonyms have different meanings.
2008 February 2:
Made some modifications to the "site links and related links" file:
Dropped the link to Mark Israel's Web site, which no longer exists.
Updated the link to Richard Lederer's Verbivore site.
Dropped the link to Random House "Word of the Day", which seems to be
no longer supported by Random House.
Under "Links to other English-usage sites", added a note to see the list
of useful sites at Intro B.
2007 December 7:
In the table of alternative pronunciation symbols that is
here. I've changed
the symbol for "oy" in "boy" to \oi\. I've added some remarks about
the representation of consonants. I've added a table of symbols
arranged in related groups (long vowels, short vowels, others).
2007 December 4:
I've prepared a table of pronunciation symbols that are intended to be a limited
alternative to ASCII IPA. The table is
here .
I've added a line to the interlinear-transliteration file that has been at the
AUE Web site for many years. The added line has the text
transliterated in my alternative symbols. That modified file is
here .
2006 December 8:
I've added a heading to the Audio Archive, "Comma Gets a Cure". You can read
about the corresponding text at
http://www.uta.fi/FAST/AK11/comma.html .
I've installed one recording of that text. You can hear it and also
find a link to the text
here
2005 August 1:
Files at this site that formerly had the qualifier "shtml" have been replaced
with identical files except that the qualifier has been changed to "html".
Requests for the former shtml files will be automatically transferred to the
new html files. For best results, bookmarks should be changed to use
the html qualifier.
2005 May 16:
The file that was formerly named categorized_links_earthlink.html
is now called categorized_links.html. Calls to
categorized_links_earthlink.html will be automatically transferred
to categorized_links.html. For
best results, bookmarks should be changed to the latter file name.
2005 February 26:
Added pages showing a
tabulation of all newsreaders used
by alt.usage.english posters in each of the years 1996 thru 2004,
with a count of the number of posters using each newsreader.
2005 January 30:
Added to the extended version of
Mark Israel's FAQ, under "Pronunciation",
a discussion of ambiguity
of the terms "long" and "short" as applied to vowels.
2005 January 13:
Added a link to the AUE-related home page about
searching only this site using
Google.
2005 January 13:
Early in 2004 I decided to discontinue monthly publishing at this Web site of
the usage statistics for certain newsgroups that I had been publishing regularly
for the previous eight years. I published them again at the end of November,
but I don't plan to resume publishing them on a regular basis.
2005 January 13:
I have tested all links at the site -- using
Xenu's Link Sleuth -- and
have fixed all broken links, either by finding a suitable replacement or, where
I couldn't find a replacement, by deleting the link. (In all of the software
at the site, there were altogether 32 bad links.)
2004 February 8:
Added an
image
showing a syncline and an anticline.
2004 January 22:
Tested all links in the Resources file
(Categorized Links)
Found eleven bad links that have now been repaired:
If anyone finds other bad links in the Resources file, I would greatly appreciate
hearing about them.
2004 January 21:
Tested all links in the Extended Version of Mark Israel's AUE FAQ
Found only six that needed to be updated:
Australian slang
OnlineDictionariesGeneral
(Link to Intro B at AUE Web site)
CMU audio files
are not easy to find, but this URL may be a start.
About the word "crap"
as it may relate to a plumber named Thomas Crapper.
Dolton's version of step-by-step spelling reforem
Directory of grammar hotlines
If anyone finds bad links in the Extended FAQ, I would greatly appreciate
hearing about them.
2004 January 17:
Added formant analysis of
"hib hid hif hig hij hik hil him hin hip hir his hit hiv hiz"
to see the variation of vowel glide with different following consonants.
2003 August 11:
Corrected an error in the URL for the Extended Version of Mark Israel's FAQ in the March 29
entry. (An erroneous blank had crept into the URL.) Also corrected
a couple of other URL errors.
By the way, I see that some people are getting "file not found" reports at this Web site
that are somewhat mysterious. For example, one of them is for "www.whitehouse.gov",
which I reference in my "Categorized Links" file. The link works okay for me.
However, I think there was a time when there was a problem with it.
This leads me to wonder if whoever is getting the "file not found" report is working with
a categorized-links file they downloaded for local use when an error still existed.
2003 March 31:
Added formant analysis of one person's
"yoo" sounds.
2003 March 29:
In recent days I've tested all links in the
Extended Version of Mark Israel's FAQ
and in the
Categorized Links file. I've replaced bad links with updated URLs where I could find them, and I've simply deleted bad links if I couldn't find a replacement.
2003 March 26:
I've installed my extended version of Mark Israel's AUE FAQ at my
new Web site.
Added note, 31 March 2003:
As I've often said, I install Mark's FAQ at my Web site with the understanding that I will remove it immediately if I receive instructions directly from him to do so. I will not, however, remove it based on a demand from some anonymous e-mailer claiming to have authority to issue such demands. Also, given my unhappy experiences with certain people, I will be suspicious of any instructions that are purported to come directly from Mark Israel by e-mail. E-mail is too easy to fake. I will accept instruction from Mark only if it is sent by US Postal Service mail, bears Mark's signature, and has the stamp of a notary public. If Mark needs my mailing address, he can request it by e-mail. I will send it to him by US Postal Service mail.
2002 October 10:
I've removed Mark Israel's FAQ from the site, including the single-page version and the
fast-access files. For the benefit of those who may have bookmarked the
files or who have followed Google links, I've replaced each of the files with a stub
directing the user to the AUE Web site.
2002 June 16:
Does this
picture
better illustrate courage or restraint?
2002 June 12:
I've added a picture of the
World Trade Center
taken a few weeks before 9/11.
Some people may think the picture eerily prophetic.
2002 March 20:
Merger of Mark Israel's FAQ with the AUE FAQ Supplement:
As an experiment, I've merged all of the items in the AUE FAQ Supplement at the AUE Web site into a copy of Mark Israel's AUE FAQ. Once the AUE webmaster had reorganized the FAQ Supplement so that it contained only true FAQ items, it became apparent to me that those items might do better as interpolated notes in the FAQ itself.
In the past, notes that I've interpolated into Mark Israel's FAQ have been enclosed in square brackets, indented, italicized, and in a different color from Mark's text. I've continued that approach with the ones I've now added from the FAQ Supplement.
To see a typical result of the merger, click on "A hypertext version of Mark Israel's AUE FAQ"; then look for "anymore and any more" under "Usage disputes". That is one of the items I've merged from the FAQ Supplement.
Since the fast-access FAQ mirrors the content of the full FAQ, you can also see the "anymore and any more" item by clicking on the entry "Fast access to Mark Israel's AUE FAQ" and again looking for the "anymore ..." entry under "Usage disputes" in the Table of Contents.
"Resources" file now installed here:
I have today installed at this Web site a copy of the "Resources" page that I used to have at the AUE Web site when I was wagonmaster there. I've recently tested all links in the file, and I've found several broken links. So far as I know, all broken links have been fixed in the copy I'm installing here.
